Papa Soldier 2 (A short story).

Image
Mama and I exchanged glances. There was an awkward silence. We watched as Papa pressed his cell phone against his ear, all he did was to say yes twice and nod. The call ended, and he heaved a deep sigh, I knew he was in a Dilemma.  “The bus leaves in 10 minutes, they will soon be here to get me.” He said to no one in particular. I simply turned my head away. My instincts don't lie, he won't come back to us.  “So, they cannot wait till the weather is better?” Mother asked with furrowed eyebrows. The rain had stopped but it drizzled at that moment. Awkward silence again, the birds taking full control of the atmosphere. “Okay...sit” Papa waved to our old leather brown cushions. “Please” He added. I pretended to not hear but at the same time, caught Mama's eyes. Those eyes though, they speak for her so well. I reluctantly sat, still looking away. His big ted talk was the last thing I needed. “Listen, I understand how both of you feel. This was sudden bu...

My Writer's Block: A Day In My Life Without Words.

Image
White screen staring right back at me.  I'm not sure how to react. I summoned all the willpower in my head and nothing seemed to work. It's one of those days where I am not sure what to write. I want to tell a story. I want to inspire, yet I don't know where to begin.  Writer's block is something every writer experiences so I wouldn’t feign naivety. It is also on those days I respond either by using it or going with the flow.    My day started off with enthusiasm. It literally kicked off on a good note. I was called for the morning prayers and instead of my usual turning in for the second round of sleep, I laid my bed and got ready for the day.   The tailors ship was the first stop. Ankara patterns are some of my best pieces. Imagine 6 yards of material being crafted to your imagination. It always blows my mind how people design pieces and make it manifest on the actual material.Enough of the Ankara love. After trying out some pieces I had ordered, my mum, siste...

Papa Soldier 1 (A short story)

Image
My sweating palms held the old suitcase of my departing father. Tears wailed up already as I practised the calmness therapy debating the wisdom of staying strong. I did not want to cry as I tried my best to ignore the drama behind me. All I thought of, was his Death. I always saw things from the positive aspect but at that time, I couldn't help it. It was obvious, nobody ever got back alive from all the stories I've read and movies I've seen. Also, everything just felt weird that day, the singing birds did not even excite me. Why were they even interrupting my thoughts with their bad voices? Even the weather was acting crazy, the rain never fell in the dry season. I just didn't get it. I adjusted my scarf and rested by the door staring at nothing.  I glanced behind me. I saw a tear roll down his cheek. I had never seen Papa cry before. I looked away while he brushed the offending cheek with his hand. I was the only one not crying this time around. Mama cried herself to ...

How To Be Productive When You Are Lazy.

Image
Have you ever looked back on your day and wondered how it was spent yet battling feelings of ingratitude? It's a daily struggle personally because I've assimilated so much productivity culture that on lazy days, I beat myself up trying to do every single thing in my day. On those days, feeling productive is a long shot and you can't wait or the day to be over.  It's easy to see tips that tell you how to manage your time, but it’s better to plan. I believe things should be simple, especially if we were to remember it. What usually helps is taking big actions in small chunks. I think it was until recently that I saw that laziness could enhance productivity. The usual response is to feel guilty and try to compare our standard of work to that of others. Yet when you understand your unique circumstances and incorporate some steps, you can be productive even on those lazy days. Plan. It sounds almost counter-intuitive to tell someone that feels lazy to plan ahead, but here...

The Mind's Ailment: On Obsession (Part 1)

Image
This is a very sensitive topic and its understanding to people is limited to a particular scenario. Once obsession is mentioned, the mind of people run straight to the intimate relationships of the person mentioned. "Oh my God, he's so obsessed with her." "He doesn't like her talking to any of her male friends. If it's not him, it's nobody else." We could go on and on. Obsession is not only about interpersonal relationships, it isn't limited to one area in any way. It doesn't have to be a person to person relationship, you could be obsessed with anything.  This is a disorder that brews from within. It doesn't come from a constant action neither is it a habit. It starts with the thoughts of a person, influenced by negative external thoughts that are soon taken to be the real thoughts and takes effect on the actions of that person. In that sense, let's get some practical definitions of obsession. Obsession can be said to be a deadly d...
