My Writer's Block: A Day In My Life Without Words.
White screen staring right back at me. I'm not sure how to react. I summoned all the willpower in my head and nothing seemed to work.
It's one of those days where I am not sure what to write. I want to tell a story. I want to inspire, yet I don't know where to begin.
Writer's block is something every writer experiences so I wouldn’t feign naivety. It is also on those days I respond either by using it or going with the flow.
My day started off with enthusiasm. It literally kicked off on a good note. I was called for the morning prayers and instead of my usual turning in for the second round of sleep, I laid my bed and got ready for the day.
The tailors ship was the first stop. Ankara patterns are some of my best pieces. Imagine 6 yards of material being crafted to your imagination. It always blows my mind how people design pieces and make it manifest on the actual material.Enough of the Ankara love.
After trying out some pieces I had ordered, my mum, sister and I left for home. We stopped on our way to buy some snacks to eat and then she left us to head to the bank.
Once I got home, it was past 1pm. It felt the day was still young, and I was happy to take on the rest of my to-do list which consisted majorly of writing, editing and social media content.
Just when I had settled in, I heard someone yelling.
“Ïruoma!”
“Ïruoma, come see!”, my sister called me to the living room.
“What?”, I replied.
“Come see these cakes.”
My favourite channel (food network) was on and the competition involved Halloween creations. Seeing the brain- shaped pieces of art dripping in strawberry sauce, I stood a while, gaping.
Such creativity. My sister kept exclaiming how beautiful they were.
My mind was also giving me timely reminders about my blank screen waiting for words to swim in it.
I finally answered duty calls and left my show. Getting into the piece, I finished at the first sitting until I took a little break.
Would you believe I slept off during my break? I'm not even talking about a quick nap, but about 2 hours of sleep.
On walking up, I was surprised how far spent the time was and proceeded downstairs with my laptop to get motivated again. That took a while.
My mum was back home, and we had company, which was distracting because I wanted to listen to the gist but also wanted to finish my writing.
I ended up multitasking and was relieved when the visitors left.
By this time, the mosquitoes outside had become unbearable and it was time to go inside. My cousin put on the generator and we all moved in.
My sister had returned from a friend's place with news of the likely resumption, as ASUU may call off the strike. That came with mixed feelings. I left my second project and chatted with friends after a status update.
By evening, my blank screen was filled with black coloured words and my writer's block was still present. At the end of day, I looked back and would not trade the events for anything in the world.
